Effective Porosity

When using polypropylene monofilaments, a thread distance of min. 1mm (with PVDF 0.6mm) is required in order to avoid the coalescence (bridging) of the scar tissue forming around the monofilaments during the woundhealing process. An unflexible scar plate would lead to an extensive reduction of the patient’s comfort. But only pores with a minimum diameter of 1mm in all directions avoid the forming of a scar plate. Pores not keeping the minimum diameter in all directions will be filled by scar tissue.

Red = Inflammatory foreign-body-reaction
Blue = Scar tissue formation
White = Remaining spaces for connective tissue formation = 42% of mesh area
